$1,000 Grant from the Alex Wilson Legacy Fund – April 2026

Celebrating the Next Generation of Tap Dancers
On June 19 and 20, 2026, young tap dancers from across Colorado gathered for the YOUTH TAP Showcase, a two-day celebration of tap dance, education, artistic expression, and community. The event brought together student dancers, professional performers, and instructors in a collaborative environment where participants could learn from one another, share their talents, and celebrate tap dance without the pressure of competition.
The showcase welcomed dancers from the greater Denver metro area and as far as Colorado Springs. Through master classes, technical and dress rehearsals, and a culminating performance, participants had opportunities to develop their skills, build connections, and experience the joy of making dance together across generations.
About MOVE! Dance Space & Arts Center
MOVE! Dance Space & Arts Center supports artists through events and classes that focus on tap dance as a traditional, historical, and cultural art form. Its YOUTH TAP Showcase provides a platform for young dancers ages 12–18 to perform, learn from experienced artists, and support one another.
The program celebrates tap dance's collaborative roots and its place in American folk history and culture, encouraging young people to pursue dance as a means of intellectual growth, artistic expression, and lifelong community connection.
Purpose of the Grant
The YOUTH TAP Showcase was created to give young tap dancers and artists an accessible, educational space to come together and encourage one another. By providing opportunities for instruction and performance, the event helps preserve tap dance traditions while supporting the next generation of dancers.
The Alex Wilson Legacy Fund grant helped make this unique gathering possible, supporting the instructors, sound and lighting, advertising, and facility costs needed to bring the event to life.
A Community United Through Dance
The 2026 showcase brought together students and professional dancers from SOLE MERGER Percussive Dance Company. The professional dancers performed as part of the program and shared their expertise through master classes, giving students the opportunity to learn directly from experienced artists.
The shared classes, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals helped foster camaraderie, encouragement, and a sense of belonging among participants. Rather than competing against one another, dancers of different ages and experience levels came together to celebrate a shared art form.
One of the event's highlights was the closing performance of the traditional Shim Sham, often considered the anthem of tap dance. The dance invites audience members to join in, and several older audience members stepped onto the floor alongside the students and professional performers. Seeing multiple generations dancing together captured the spirit of the showcase: a welcoming community united by rhythm, tradition, and a love of dance.
The Impact
The YOUTH TAP Showcase welcomed:
15 students attending master classes
13 young performers ages 12–18
3 professional dancers
3 instructors
1 college student supporting sound and lighting
39 audience members
MOVE! Dance Space & Arts Center was pleased with the turnout and the level of participation. The event provided young dancers with meaningful educational and performance opportunities while strengthening connections across Colorado's tap dance community.
Funding
The Alex Wilson Legacy Fund grant supported instructor fees, sound and lighting, advertising, facility use and overhead, and the overall costs of presenting the showcase. This support helped make an educational and performance experience available to young dancers while contributing to the preservation of tap dance as a living artistic and cultural tradition.
Through the YOUTH TAP Showcase, young artists were able to learn, perform, and build relationships with fellow dancers and professional mentors. The event demonstrated how the arts can bring generations together, encourage creative expression, and keep important cultural traditions alive.
